RAMSGATE BOOK & ART FESTIVAL – a Raging Success A hearty and resounding BRAVO! to the wonderful mottled bunch of organizers and volunteers for putting together this fabulous annual event. The overriding theme for Festival this year was “# Connecting” – and boy was there a great deal of exactly that going on. “The tireless plotting and planning for The Ramsgate Book & Art Festival, was worth every drop of blood sweat and tears!” is the general consensus from everybody who visited, sponsored, spoke at, worked and volunteered at the Festival. The action took place along the main road of Ramsgate village itself. RAMSGATE BOOK & ART FESTIVAL – UPDATE The tireless plotting and planning for The Ramsgate Book & Art Festival, is heating up to boiling point! The program is filled to capacity with an exciting and varied array of authors, artists, entertainment and creative workshops. The Festival takes place along the main road of Ramsgate village itself. Galleries, restaurants, antique shops, courtyards, car parks and our beautiful Whale Deck overlooking the ocean are all ‘venues’ where events unfold. The overriding theme for Festival this year is “# Connecting” – a broad subject encouraging communication in all imaginable spheres – both physical and abstract. The official opening of the Festival takes place on Thursday 2nd August at 6pm at The Artists’ Gallery. All are welcome to attend. The opening of the Festival will be coupled with a prestigious and historical art exhibition, entitled “Boyley’s World” – the centenary celebration of the life and works of South African master painter Errol Boyley. A superb selection of his works will be on sale. Residents on the South Coast who would like to sell their pieces painted by Errol Boyley at this exhibition, are welcome to contact Artists’ Gallery. The Festival planners are delighted to announce that hilarious radio talk show host, journalist, author and television scriptwriter, Ndumiso Ngcobo is one of the top authors confirmed for the Festival. Described as comical, wry and topical – his book entitled ‘Some Of My Best Friends Are White’ became an instant bestseller, peaking at number two in the Sunday Times Bestseller list. Following hot on the heels of this bestseller is laser-sharp commentary on the Rainbow Nation, entitled ‘Is it Coz I’m Black?’     Also taking part in the festival is multi-talented author Paul Crilley. Paul has been writing professionally for the past 15 years and... read more

Crime Alert: Ramsgate NGO Scammed

The Chairpersons and Committee of the Ramsgate Conservancy and Ramsgate Tourism wish to let you, the Members, know that we have recently become an unknowing victim of an e-mail scam that has resulted in our paying out funds intended for contractual payments for the refurbishment of the new Ramsgate Eco-Tourism Info Centre, to a third, fraudulent party. These scams have recently been widely broadcast in the media and innocent people are continuing to fall prey to these unscrupulous and malicious fraudsters each and every day. It is a testament to their lack of morals that they target community and charity organizations like ours.  As a result of this scam, an amount of R75 000 has been paid from the project fund to a fraudster.  Please be assured that it is by no means due to any negligence on our part, but we do however apologize unreservedly for the loss that we have incurred.  A case had been opened with the police and the two banks concerned are working to resolve this issue.  Please also be assured that further protocols and stricter measures have now been put in place in an attempt to prevent this from happening again and we ask you all to be alert when making any monetary payments whether in private or business capacity. In the meantime, the show must go on!  As a result of this situation, we are now short of funds to complete the project on time.  Until such times as we know whether the banks will pay back the money, we urgently need to raise funds to continue. Funds can be in the form of a loan or a donation.   A local donor has kindly offered to enter into a ‘Match Funding’ situation with the community.  In other words, for every Rand donated by a community member or... read more

RAMSGATE BOOK & ART FESTIVAL DATE IS SET! Thursday 2nd August – Sunday 5th August 2018 is the weekend chosen for this year’s Festival. After the resounding success of last year’s Festival, it was decided to bring the date forward slightly so as to hopefully, avoid torrential downpours – which was the only dampener (excuse the pun) that could be said about the 2017 Festival. Already, the core group of this Festival has met with a larger group of volunteers who are keen to get on board to help organize various sections of the Festival, as well as the business owners in Ramsgate. Everyone seems to be in synch on this one: this year will be even bigger and better! For one, the weekend has included one extra day – starting with a bang on the Thursday evening and ending on the Sunday afternoon. This will allow for the Festival to be beefed up by offering more time and opportunities in the way of on-site events, book signings, authors giving talks, art exhibitions, pop-up book shops, workshops, performances, demonstrations, themed meals, specials, crafts, street food, buskers etc. If anyone would like to get involved or do something specific on the Festival programme please get in touch with one of the organizers listed below. All suggestions are welcome and any constructive help is encouraged. No-one knows your business better than yourself so the idea is that each business concentrate on their own space. All are encouraged to use their own initiative to ‘dress’ up your business by offering products or services unique to your industry – in a quirky, eye-catching, manner. This is a community-driven Festival – start brainstorming ideas and share them! Peter Kilian 082 442 5539 Pauline Lee 083 654 4303 Natascha Muller 078 043 8437 Barbie Meyer 082... read more
